The Albanese government has just announced a game-changing $2.3 billion battery rebate program that could supercharge the way Australians store and use solar energy—but it all hinges on Labor winning the upcoming federal election.

If Labor is re-elected, eligible households will be able to access a 30% rebate on the cost of a home battery from July 1, 2025. That could mean around $4,000 off the cost of an average 11.5 kWh system.
This would make it much more affordable to store solar power for use when the sun isn’t shining—giving families more control over energy bills and energy independence.
How Much Could You Save?
Government estimates suggest:
- Homes with solar and battery: Up to $2,300/year in electricity bill savings.
- Homes with existing solar adding a battery: Around $1,100/year saved.
This has the potential to cut power bills by up to 90% for some households.
Who Would Be Eligible?
If implemented, the rebate would be delivered through the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) and apply to households with:
- Existing rooftop solar, or
- New installations that include both solar and battery systems.
Only Virtual Power Plant (VPP) ready batteries will qualify under the proposal, ensuring systems can support the grid when needed.
What Happens Next?
